Lisa

We have much to celebrate this Sunday, as we share our annual picnic after worship. It has been a strong year in leadership and in building community. The Summer Worship schedule is filled with intriguing topics, all set for the 9:30 am gatherings. And we have just signed a yearly renewable contract with our new Director of Lifespan Religious Exploration who will begin on July 7!

A hearty shout out to Jeff DellaRovere, who deftly organized the four month RE search. We interviewed several candidates and have happily chosen Susannah Bales. Her bio is below.

Many thanks as well to the stalwart Search Committee, who navigated busy schedules to give input: Jennie Lofgren, Becky Stiles, Bridget Sitkoff, Paul Casaz, Nancy Devine, Xyla Sophinos and Grace DellaRovere.

There is much we can do together to deepen and widen our multi-generational beloved community. Let’s keep on keeping on.

Blessings Be, Rev. Lisa

Introducing our new Lifespan Religious Exploration Director: Susannah Bales

Susannah (she/hers) brings a background in both ministry and mental health, having served for over a decade in Religious Education roles in Atlanta, Georgia and recently in Rhode Island. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Arts and Religion from Pfeiffer University and a Master of Divinity from Emory University, with a focus on Society and Personality. In addition to her ministry work, she is also a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.

Susannah has led vibrant, inclusive programs for children and youth, with an emphasis on social justice, LGBTQIA+ affirmation, mindfulness, and anti-racism. She has worked with congregations of all sizes, supporting both children and teens, training volunteers, designing curriculum, and facilitating powerful community-wide events. She also co-founded TransDecatur, a peer support group for trans individuals and their families, and has advocated on behalf of children through her involvement with the Interfaith Children’s Movement in Atlanta. Her recent work as Recruitment Manager for a global human rights fellowship reflects her deep commitment to justice and intercultural engagement.

Now rooted in New England, Susannah is excited to bring her passion for spiritual growth, inclusive leadership, and community resilience to First Parish and to pursue her deepening commitment to Unitarian Universalism. When not working, Susannah enjoys gardening, participating in community theatre, and spending time with her partner, Patrick, and their two pups, Mabel and Benny, at their home in Providence, Rhode Island.

Music This Week

Music

This Sunday the Meetinghouse Choir will be offering one of the finest operatic choruses every written: “The Promise of Living” from THE TENDER LAND by Aaron Copland. This opera was premiered in 1954 and was originally intended for television. Our four Hunsaker soloists will also present and anthem called “When I Sing” by Russell Robinson.

Our tradition at First Parish is to close the final service of our church year by singing the Hallelujah Chorus from MESSIAH by G.F. Handel. Anyone is welcome to grab a score (which will be sitting on a chair next to the piano) and sing along with the choir. We hope you can join in the singing!

RE This Week
