Climate Justice
First Parish in Milton advocates for the local community, the Commonwealth and the world in the face of climate change through direct action, working to advance legislation, and engaging in public advocacy. In May 2021, the First Parish in Milton unanimously approved the following commitment:
“Given the urgency of the crisis we face, our Congregation commits to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions and to practicing total sustainability in all congregational activities by 2035.”
Solar energy at First Parish
In 2020, First Parish in Milton installed a 55 kW solar energy system on our campus. The system provides the majority of First Parish’s electricity and has dramatically reduced our carbon emissions.
As of August 2025, our solar panels have:
- Produced more than 280 megawatt-hours of electricity. In a typical year, our solar panels produce as much electricity as it takes to power five homes.
- Prevented 218 tons of carbon dioxide emissions – equivalent to the amount produced by 46 gasoline-powered cars driven for a year.
- Through our participation in Massachusetts’ community solar program, supplied discounted clean electricity to a partner non-profit organization, helping to reduce their carbon emissions and devote more resources to critical work in our community.
