Over the past 18 months, a small committee including members from FP Milton, FP Brookline, FP Boston and the UU Urban Ministryin Roxbury (UUUM) have been meeting to plan the start-up of an innovative new social action venture, the Jericho Road Roxbury project. We are thrilled to announce that the program will indeed launch on December 1, 2012!
The UUUM, well known for its non-sectarian programs for minority urban youth and victims of domestic violence, has recruited our congregations to furnish leadership, volunteers and financial resources. The Jericho Road Project is an innovative community development model which pairs professionals with nonprofits for time-limited volunteer projects, in order to build capacity of those non-profit organizations. Jericho Road Roxbury would bring expert consulting services to nonprofit organizations (NPOs) in Roxbury; the ultimate goal would be to build NPO capacity, and enhance community quality of life both for the volunteers and Roxbury residents.
This collaboration represents a unique and creative opportunity for our congregation to live up to our mission to “Take Bold Action” outside our walls.
We seek to raise $7,000 from within the First Parish Milton congregation in order to match contributions already raised by the other congregations to help fund the project’s first year. Several of our fellow parishioners have started us off with generous individual donations, and we are near our goal. However, we are still in need of about $1000.
Thus, we are designating the collection from Sunday, November 18, to help us to reach our goal. Please come prepared to donate what you can to bring this project to successful fruition. Checks can be made out to FP Milton with Jericho Road in the memo line. Donations are fully tax-deductible, and an acknowledgement can be provided for your records.
In addition, there will soon be opportunities for other ways to share your gifts, as a volunteer and as a “cheerleader” for this program. We expect to begin the volunteer recruitment process in the next few months, so please be on the lookout!
